Missed-call text-back.
How it works, what a good first message says, and the mistakes that lose customers anyway.

The short answer
Missed-call text-back sends an automatic text a few seconds after a call to your business goes unanswered. Instead of hanging up and calling the next business, the customer gets a reply while they still have the phone in their hand — and the conversation, and the job, stays with you.
How it works
- A customer calls and nobody picks up: you’re on a job, it’s after hours, or the line is busy.
- Within seconds, a text goes to the number that called.
- The customer replies with what they need.
- Basic text-back stops there and hands the thread to you. An AI receptionist keeps going: it asks the right questions, books the job and alerts the right person.
What a good first text says
“Hi, this is Tiger Air’s automated assistant — sorry we missed you. Is something broken right now, or do you want to book service? Reply STOP to opt out.”
- Who it is from, using your business name.
- That it is automated, if it is. Customers forgive automation; they don’t forgive pretending.
- One simple question that moves things forward.
- How to opt out.
Rules to follow
- Reply only to people who actually called you, and only about their call.
- Send reminders, offers and review requests only to customers who agreed to receive them.
- Honor STOP immediately and confirm it.
- Send follow-ups at sensible hours (8 AM to 9 PM in the customer’s time zone). The instant reply to a call is the exception, because the customer just called.
- Rules vary by industry and state, so check what applies to your business with your attorney.
Mistakes that still lose the customer
- “Sorry we missed you, please call back.” That just sends them back to a phone you can’t answer.
- A slow reply. A text an hour later often arrives after they’ve booked someone else.
- Booking emergencies for later. A no-heat call at 2 AM needs your on-call person, not a slot at 8 AM.
- No way to reach a human. If the customer asks for a person, someone should follow up quickly.
- Nobody reading the replies. If replies land in an inbox nobody checks, the text-back did nothing.
What to measure
- The share of missed calls that got a text within a minute.
- The share of those customers who replied.
- The share of replies that became booked jobs.
- The time from missed call to booked job.

What is missed-call text-back?
An automatic text sent to someone a few seconds after their call to your business goes unanswered, so the conversation continues by text before they call someone else.
Is it legal to text someone who called my business?
A single reply to someone who just called you, about their call, is a response to their own contact rather than marketing. Reminders, offers and review requests need their agreement first, and every message should honor STOP. Rules vary by industry and state, so confirm with your attorney.
How fast should the text go out?
Within seconds, while the caller still has the phone in their hand. A reply that arrives an hour later often reaches someone who has already booked elsewhere.
